On Mac OS X GNU tar is called 'gnutar' (/usr/bin/gnutar) and is not the same as 'tar' (/usr/bin/tar), unless you've installed gnutar using fink (/sw/bin/tar).
You shouldn't have any problems with gnutar. Stuart.
