I've put together a Byte Range enabled ResourceReader which will cope with any simple Byte Range request and fail gracefully if not. (By simple I mean any request for a single contiguous block rather than multiple disjoint blocks.)
It still has caching enabled for non- byte range style requests for resources. It looks like Nagoya is down at the moment, but I'll pop it on Bugzilla as a patch when I next get a response from it.
