Carsten, Thanks for the speedy reply. In doing some more debugging it looks like this exception is raised with old versions of Tomcat. I was running 4.0.4 with the cocoon 2.1-dev head and got this exception (on a clean install). I verified it under Linux as well as FreeBSD. After upgrading to Tomcat 4.1.12, the problem disappears, so I'm assuming the fix for this exception was in Tomcat and not Cocoon. If not, and you are worried about backwards compatibility, you should take a look at running 2.1-dev inside of Tomcat 4.0.4 -- you might have some issues there.
