Thanks for the input. I'm not using JAVAC though, I'm using jikes for speed.
So I think there's another problem.

About a year ago there was a discussion about jpg serializer in Sun JDK
leaking memory, but this seems to be fixed.

I was thinking more in the lines of batik having problems maybe.

I would like to profile: then it would become obvious.
