Cocoon uses logkit by default (http://jakarta.apache.org/avalon/logkit/). The sitemap is filled with logger= references and logkit.xconf in WEB-INF/ has detailed setup for what to do with the messages it receives. By default they are written to log files in WEB-INF/logs.
