In my opinion there were three factors: the refactoring of several cocoon internal API's that affected the technical viability of the patch, a lack of interest among developers because of the lack of general applicability, and some questions over the specific technical solution. Because of these three I'm marking it WONTFIX. Still, I think the issue of external invalidation of cached items is a need in Cocoon and would love to see the problem solved. I am beginning some scratchpad work on a solution that may be general enough to apply to your specific needs - of course you're more than welcome to participate if you still have interest.
