I know many web server have the ability to do what you mentioned. But
they AFAIR don't do that by default but because of their configurations
(they come configured that way "out of the box").

And to cite a word from Stefano Mazzocchi "only becaue many web servers
have implemented that hack we don't have to do it also" :)
