Yup. It seems to be true.
Having received Vadim's note, I did the whole thing over again from scratch
including the win2k service install.
There seem to be no problems. One change I made to my workstation between
yesterday's failure and this morning's success was to upgrade/reinstall the
JDK (1.3.1 to 1.3.1_01) and JRE; it's possible the elder installation was
corrupted in some way.
