I using Forte 3.0 CE and I'm very happy with it. It's not really an XML Editor but a Java IDE. In the 2.0 it includes an XML Editor which can check for wellformdnes and validate against a DTD. It also fits perfectly to Cocoon because I can do both, Java and Xml editing, in one tool. And it's for free.
