While I was rewriting my sitemap file today, I noticed how much "stuff" is
in it, and wondered if it wouldn't be possible to add a feature like
<map:include /> that would allow you to store different segments of the file
in separate, smaller files.  For example, you could have one for your
generators, action maps, and pipelines, etc.  Ideally, if you were mounting
other sitemaps in other directories, they could reference some of these
segments to simplify things a bit.

I don't know much about the details of how the sitemap is parsed, but it
occurred to me that this feature is part of the xslt namespace, so it can't
be that difficult to duplicate.
