Hi everyone,

I just wanted to announce the first (1.0) stable release of the POI
project. We released on 12/30/01. This edition includes the pure java
port of Microsoft's OLE 2 Compound Document format (POIFS), a pure java
port of Microsoft's Excel (XLS) file format (HSSF), and an XLS
Serializer (HSSFSerializer) as well as documentation and examples on how
to set it up and use it with Cocoon 2. We build on the examples
distributed with Cocoon 2 so that everyone can try them "out of the box"
(takes under two minutes to set up).

Thanks to everyone who helped make this release possible. A Special
thanks to Ken Barozzi for his examples and help with the serializer!

I hope everyone will try it and report any defects or feature requests.
You can read more at http://poi.sourceforge.net and
http://www.sourceforge.net/projects/poi. We also have a new developer
mailing list and a new user development mailing list. Please feel free
to get involved! (see above URLs for details)

We've already started our 2.0 development cycle and you can expect a
development build shortly with new features. By the end of this cycle
you can expect a Cocoon 2 XLS->XML Generator, full Formula support and
quite possibly a Word Doc port (for a future Serializer).

Happy new year.

Thanks,

Andrew C. Oliver
