Do you have correct extra classpath set up in the web.xml? Cocoon should
pick batik from there (last time I checked it was working Ok).

Because it does not work without special care. If you take a look at
4.0.1 or 4.0.4 installation instructions, you should scream and run away
from 4.0.3 ;)
