You also need to study FO(Formatting Objects). That is a type of XML that can be converted to PDF.

 

Your XML----XSL---->FO XML------fo2pdf serializer----> PDF

 

Try www.w3c.org for FO.

 

But only when you have a good understanding of FO and XSLT.
