I unjarred the bin jar, then jarred them back together with the -0
option and got jar about twice as big. put it in /WEB-INF/lib and
restarted tomcat. still the same error...

I had the exact same problem...

which was solved by uploading an *uncompressed* mysql driver .jar to
WEB-INf/lib (yes yes, it seems like a a lot of voodoo nonsense...)
