Hmmm...a 2.4Ghz Pentium beats a 400Mhz SPARC?!
Not surprising.  In general, Sun SPARC/Solaris JVMs are
tuned for better SMP performance, and can lag on single
processor CPU intensive performance.  But you should
be comparing like systems...I/O, cache, default JVM
parameters, etc all can make a difference.  The current
J2SE 1.4.1 is pretty fast, too:

For general performance info, take a look at some of the performance hints

or any of the many books on Java performance.

Also, search the JavaOne conference archives for 'tuning' or 'performance'
