Hmmm...a 2.4Ghz Pentium beats a 400Mhz SPARC?! Not surprising. In general, Sun SPARC/Solaris JVMs are tuned for better SMP performance, and can lag on single processor CPU intensive performance. But you should be comparing like systems...I/O, cache, default JVM parameters, etc all can make a difference. The current J2SE 1.4.1 is pretty fast, too: http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.1/
For general performance info, take a look at some of the performance hints at http://java.sun.com/docs/books/performance/1st_edition/html/JPTOC.fm.html or any of the many books on Java performance. Also, search the JavaOne conference archives for 'tuning' or 'performance' at http://servlet.java.sun.com/javaone/sf2002/conf/sessions/all-all-regular.en.jsp for some interesting presentations.
