Robert, IBM was reknown for their inability to produce products that are *not* really compatible with the relevant specifications. WebSphere 3.5.x is such an example. I am using WebSphere 4.0.2 and 4.0.3, and all these teething problems are now a matter of past ...
I would strongly advise you to consider upgrading to the version numbers mentioned above.
