Regardless, what does setting up backup to yes actually mean in the
volume creation process?

What facility/application is used to do the backups? Where are they
stored? Other questions, but I hope some will be answered when I know the
backup facility used.

Regarding the backup stuff: IMHO it could be placed separately in a
"module" where the local administrator could choose between several
ones, if/as necessary. Different sites use different means for taking
backups so this code doesn't really belong to the general volume
creation operation.
