Aha!  The problem was that vice-setup-rvm wasn't finding rvmutl,
and wasn't complaining about it.  So no rvmlog or rvmdata was
found.

I've now made sure rvmlog and rvmdata are on the path for
vice-setup-rvm, and everything works.  Thanks very much for your
help.
