problem using ar in /coda

While doing large compiles in my /coda tree, ar causes my venus to die
horribly.  Here is a simple example:

starlake:/coda# ar -r test.a test1 test2 
17:15:38 Fatal Signal (11); pid 635 becoming a zombie...
17:15:38 You may use gdb to attach to 635 

Any ideas?
