Libraries and Cultural Resources at the University of Calgary invites 
applications for the position of Metadata Librarian at the Assistant Librarian 
rank.  This is a four-year, renewable tenure-track appointment with an 
anticipated start date of August 1, 2017.
Libraries and Cultural Resources (LCR) is a leader in the development of 
innovative information resources and services, locally, nationally and 
internationally. In a converged environment, it successfully incorporates the 
resources and services of libraries, institutional and research archives, rare 
books and special collections, art galleries, and a university press to provide 
outstanding support for scholarship, learning, and the creation of knowledge.
Position Responsibilities
Reporting to the Director, Metadata Services, the Metadata Librarian 
conceptualizes, plans, and implements the descriptive framework and practices 
for digital projects, print materials, and other initiatives.  As a member of 
the Technology, Discovery and Digital Services team, this position leads the 
adoption of technologies related to creation and use of metadata, the 
standardization of descriptive metadata practice across formats, projects, and 
programs, and the implementation of interoperability of discovery environments 
to support the teaching and research mission of the University of Calgary.
Responsibilities will include:
*         Design, document, guide, and manage the processes and schemas for 
provision of metadata for digital projects and repository collections to 
enhance accessibility
*         Develop, maintain, and communicate an intellectual framework for 
description of digital objects across projects, programs, and initiatives.
*         Follow guidelines established with stakeholders, provide description 
of digital objects in a variety of contexts.
*         Employ or develop software tools and scripts to manage and migrate 
existing metadata sets, or to transform, tidy, and curate raw descriptive data, 
according to the needs of individual projects.
*         Explore and adopt advanced schemes or tools for metadata creation and 
use, automated extraction, or geospatial analysis.
*         Work closely with project stakeholders to develop appropriate 
metadata profiles and levels of detail for digital projects and repository 
collections.
*         Review, recommend, and provide functional ownership for software 
platforms and tools related to the creation of metadata.
*         Coordinate and/or carry out training for metadata providers. Help 
develop metadata competencies in other library staff.
*         Ongoing consultation and collaboration to engage and support 
researchers and the broader community with data intensive projects, 
digitization initiatives, and digital preservation.
*         Support the development of the knowledge and understanding of 
metadata to assist LCR colleagues with their participation in, and support of 
projects.
*         Track current issues and trends in metadata and promote awareness 
among colleagues
Required Qualifications
*         Master's degree from an American Library Association accredited 
program in librarianship, or recognized equivalent
*         Working knowledge of at least two metadata standards: MARC, Dublin 
Core, METS, MODS, RDF, EAD, EAC-CPF, PREMIS, and/or TEI.
*         Working knowledge of metadata manipulation tools such as: MARCEdit, 
Open/LODRefine, Catmandu, XSLT, XQuery
*         Evidence of successful project management
*         Experience in providing research support and consultation to faculty, 
researchers and/or students
*         Familiarity with academic and scholarly research practices
*         Ability to work both independently and with a variety of groups in 
collaborative and cooperative situations
*         High-level interpersonal and consultation skills
*         Ability to communicate effectively and persuasively across scholarly 
and technology domains
*         Creative and analytical thinking skills and innovative 
problem-solving ability
*         Demonstrated ability to work effectively within a team environment.
*         Demonstrated creativity and ability to follow and anticipate 
developing technologies.
*         Interest in exploring and evaluating new technologies and in seeking 
opportunities to share this knowledge with colleagues
*         Candidates should have strong oral and written English communication 
skills.
Salary and Benefits
Position will commensurate with qualifications and experience, at the rank of 
Assistant Librarian (Salary Range is $59,752 to $81,458 per year)
