The New Schoenberg Database of Manuscripts seeks a Programmer Analyst for a 
two-year, grant-funded project to carry out large-scale analyses and 
visualizations of the history and provenance of medieval and Renaissance 
manuscripts by linking heterogeneous sources of data relating to them. In 
partnership with the Bodleian Libraries at Oxford University, the Institut de 
Recherche de l'Histoire des Texts in Paris, and the Semantic Web Computing 
Group at Aalto University, the specific objectives of the project are to:



* Create a Linked Data environment for bringing together diverse data about the 
history and provenance of individual medieval and Renaissance manuscripts in 
collaboration with project partners at the e-Research Centre and Bodleian 
Libraries at Oxford University, the Institut de Recherche de l'Histoire des 
Texts in Paris, and the Semantic Web Computing Group at Aalto University.

* Populate this environment with data supplied by the partner institutions and 
from publicly available datasets

* Carry out a series of large-scale analyses and visualizations of the data, 
focusing on research questions related to provenance histories of manuscripts



Working under the Digital Content Programmer (DCP) for Special Collections at 
the Penn Libraries, the Programmer Analyst will coordinate with international 
partners to develop software, data models, and workflow. The Programmer Analyst 
will work with the DCP, SDBM staff, and the Libraries' Technical Services team 
and project partners to design and implement a Linked Data model for the 
analysis of the history and movement of medieval and Renaissance manuscripts 
over the centuries. The Programmer Analyst will use technologies such as Ruby 
on Rails, RDF, SPARQL, and JSON-LD to build an interface for the sharing of 
SDBM data in a Linked Data environment.

Qualifications

A Bachelor's Degree, or equivalent experience, is required in computer science, 
information science or relevant discipline. Also required is 1-2 years of 
experience with web application development for publicly accessible, 
interactive websites using relevant technologies such as jQuery or Ruby on 
Rails and using data structures from SQL or XML or equivalent combination of 
education and experience. Preferred qualifications will include experience with 
linked data technologies and applications.

Successful candidates will also possess:

* Proven development skills, including developing rich interactive websites

* Experience working with SQL databases

* Experience working with source code version control systems, such as Git, 
Subversion, or Mercurial

* Experience with unit and integration testing practices, such as test-driven 
development (TDD) or behavior-driven development (BDD)

* Outstanding communication skills

* Ability to work effectively with stakeholders and work collaboratively with 
technical staff

* Demonstrated capacity to learn new methods and processes


Not required, but desirable are knowledge of HTML5 and SPARQL and experience 
working in the Digital Humanities
