I think it was test driven design. I distinctly remember how grateful I was for the applause when I got a test to pass while I was stumbling around live coding in Java with Eclipse. I still often develop with unit tests ... but Java and Eclipse, not so much :) //Ed PS. We do look young ... and white ... and male. It's good that some things have changed. Progress is possible.
