Cornell University Library seeks a Metadata Projects Librarian to help bring collections to users.In collaboration with other key staff, the Metadata Projects Librarian provides strategic and technical guidance on metadata practice for Cornell University Library's (CUL) digital, physical and virtual collections within the broader context of CUL's digital and programmatic needs.
This position provides expertise in the development, implementation and assessment of metadata policies, procedures and infrastructure to Cornell; meanwhile, the Librarian monitors external developments, standards development and changing needs in these areas. The Librarian provides consultation and advocacy to both CUL colleagues and the community more broadly; this effort demands a strong knowledge of well-established and evolving metadata standards as well as their practical implications. The Metadata Projects Librarian actively participates in local and national discussions relating to the access, retrieval, description, and management of library resources and in in the library's research and development efforts. This position is being recruited concurrent to the Metadata Operations Librarian position. Key Opportunities: Engage with experienced and supportive colleagues in a highly collaborate environment Focus on metadata design and guiding metadata creation Contribute to strategic library initiatives focused on resource discovery and digital preservation Collaborate on the development of long-term solutions for improved metadata creation and management Contribute to building a body of knowledge at the intersection of technology and cultural inclusion Play an active role in professional organizations inside and outside of the Cornell University Library community Required Qualifications: Advanced degree from an accredited institution Knowledge of a variety of MARC and non-MARC metadata standards and schema Aptitude for learning new technologies and metadata standards Excellent organizational and project management skills Strong service orientation and interest in library users' values and needs Excellent communication and analytic skills, including the ability to work well in a team-based environment Preferred Qualifications: Experience with scripting languages and/or tools for data manipulation (e.g. OpenRefine, Python, XSLT, etc.) Practical experience in the use of MARC and non-MARC principles, standards and tools Familiarity with, and aptitude for, the application of linked data technologies and methodologies (e.g. ontology development, semantic tools and best practices) Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
