Head of Cataloging & Metadata | William & Mary Libraries |
Williamsburg, Virginia

William & Mary Libraries seeks an innovative, thoughtful leader for the
position of Head of Cataloging & Metadata who loves problem solving,
improving workflows, and collaborating with a team to improve the discovery of
our library collections. This position provides leadership and coordination of
cataloging and metadata services for the libraries while directly supervising
3.5 FTE who are engaged in cataloging print and physical media. This position
will consult with the Content Services Team including acquisitions and
e-resource management as well as the libraries at large while promoting a
collaborative and cohesive work environment. Though we expect this position to
handle original cataloging as part of their workflow, they will also be devoted
to developing cataloging & metadata policies, creating useful
documentation, and initiating collaborative projects to increase usage of our
electronic, digital, and physical materials by making them more easily
accessible.

The Head of Cataloging & Metadata will help coordinate projects for
non-MARC metadata from our digital collections and establish and document
relevant policies and procedures to ensure efficient workflows for all library
content. Though the creation of MARC records is at the heart of our cataloging
work, we also hope to move increasingly into new platforms where patrons can
discover materials through initiatives such as linked data, BibFrame, and
digital collections.  This position is part of the Libraries’ Content Services
Team which includes acquisitions, cataloging, systems, continuing resources,
budget & finance, digital services, and collection development and is led
by the Associate Dean for Collections & Content Services. We seek someone
who can collaborate successfully with their supervisor, the staff they
supervise, and others in the team and library on their goals and
responsibilities.

Some of the major responsibilities of this position include:

Perform original cataloging for various media using MARC records (RDA
standards), BibFrame description, and possibly other standards as the catalog
and discovery systems develop. Manage the libraries’ batch processing,
analysis, and editing of records.
Leading a small team of staff (6 FTE total, with 3.5 direct reports) to
efficiently and thoughtfully analyze and complete work related to metadata and
cataloging, establish best practices, and improve metadata and access to the
libraries’ collections. Create a positive work environment which promotes
values such as innovation and creativity, efficiency in handling projects,
thoughtful listening and collaboration, and using data (including user studies)
to make decisions.
Collaborate and consult with librarians and staff across the library consortia
(including librarians at Colonial Williamsburg’s Rockefeller Library and the
Law Library of William & Mary) to develop consensus regarding priorities,
goals, processes, and policies that provide consistency and improve access and
usability for our collections.
Focus on forward thinking approaches to the discovery and use of library
collections. Research current professional practices and trends. Keep abreast
of vendor options and ideas that are developed by groups including OCLC, other
academic libraries, and a broad range of web developers who might inform the
way we provide access to our materials.
Contribute to library assessment activities and direct the collection of
metrics for data services that help reflect the productivity and breadth of
services provided by cataloging staff.

The College of William & Mary values diversity and invites applications
from underrepresented groups who will enrich the research, teaching and service
missions of the university. The College is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative
Action employer and encourages applications from women, minorities, protected
