Ball State University Libraries’ Archives and Special Collections is a teaching archive that provides access to a diversity of unique and valuable print and digital materials and maintains a strong dedication to student instruction, faculty research, community engagement, and public service. To support these research, instructional, and community engagement initiatives, Archives and Special Collections and the Ball State University Libraries have long maintained a commitment to digital collection building and digital preservation. The University Libraries builds and maintains the Digital Media Repository, a digital research library and archive containing over 250,000 digitized and born-digital records. Included are over 140 digitized archival collections including historic photographs, newspapers, organizational records, films, audio recordings, oral history interviews, maps, and architectural drawings, all of which are fully searchable and accessible to the general public. The University Libraries has also developed a robust and secure technical infrastructure to preserve over 120 TB of electronic archival records. The primary position function will be to provide management and direction of Archives and Special Collections processes related to collection digitization, electronic records management, and web archiving. This archivist will develop and implement workflows to efficiently and effectively preserve, describe, and provide access to digital archival records according to professional best practices. They will collaborate with library colleagues and campus and community partners to develop electronic records lifecycle management programs and workflows. With the hiring of this position, the Archives will launch a web archiving initiative to preserve online content and social media content related to the Archives’ main collecting areas. This archivist will have the opportunity to advance meaningful and important work in areas of community engagement and scholarship by developing this web archive.
