The University of Virginia Library seeks an experienced information technology 
professional, manager, and mentor to serve as the Executive Director for 
Information Technology. Reporting to the Dean of Libraries, the Executive 
Director is a member of the library senior leadership team and represents the 
library in university-wide IT discussions, and in the various national and 
international communities where library technologists develop shared 
infrastructure, define standards and best practices, preserve cultural 
heritage, and promote new library technology.

The UVa Library is a founding member of Fedora Repository, Blacklight, Samvera 
and APTrust, community-driven software and preservation efforts demonstrating a 
longstanding and continued commitment to evolving digital stewardship 
technologies and practices. The Executive Director, working across the Library 
and with other stakeholders, will help establish and sustain infrastructure, 
applications and practices stewarding digital assets from creation to access to 
preservation.

As a member of the library senior leadership team, the Executive Director 
participates in shaping and communicating the library's strategic direction and 
in allocating the library's human and financial resources. This position 
directly manages a budget of about $1.2 million annually and 34 full time 
staff, including four department head direct reports. Areas of responsibility 
include: information architecture; system and enterprise integration; software 
development; user experience interfaces and research; open source technologies; 
the integrated library system; repository solutions; information security; as 
well as support for research and teaching, discovery and access, digital 
preservation, and metadata.

As an IT professional and leader within the University, the Executive Director 
has an opportunity to serve in an advisory, steering or consulting capacity 
with other university IT leaders, and interacts regularly with peers in 
comparable positions in other institutions and organizations. This work 
requires effective partnerships in the service of major projects or executive 
initiatives, cross-institutional strategic planning, and advocacy for the 
library's needs.
 

Required Qualifications

- Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or a related field
- 5 years of relevant experience managing technology within higher education or 
cultural institutions
- Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills, including 
the ability to teach workshops and make presentations

Preferred Qualifications

- Master's Degree in Computer Science or a related field
- Project management certification and experience managing complex projects
- 7 years of relevant experience managing technology for a research library
