The University of British Columbia is a global centre for teaching,
learning and research, consistently ranked among the top 20 public universities
in the world and recently recognized as North America’s most international
university. The Okanagan campus is an intimate learning community embracing
bold new ways of thinking that attract exceptional students and faculty. More
than 9,100 students from throughout the Okanagan region, across Canada and 99
other countries are enrolled in undergraduate and graduate programs in eight
faculties and schools.
This is an exciting time to join UBC’s Okanagan Campus Library. A major
renovation and expansion to the campus Library that doubled its size was
completed in January 2019. With this new and innovative space, the team is
growing to animate new services and spaces. The Okanagan Library prides itself
on being an inclusive place, a service-oriented team, and a nexus of scholarly
engagement. It leads by example and empowers by design.
Reporting to the Associate Chief Librarian, the Visualization and Emerging
Media Librarian (VEM), collaborates with users, teams, and departments across
the University and in the community, and works collegially to develop a
strategic approach to this new area of service. The role of the VEM Librarian
will include conducting individual and specific needs assessments to inform
service, technical, teaching & learning, and infrastructural requirements.
This position is also responsible for designing and delivering training,
presentations, workshops, and classes on approaching, creating, implementing
and using visualization and immersion tools in a variety of academic settings.
The VEM Librarian will be a key member of UBC’s Okanagan campus Library and
will participate in the overall planning for library services and spaces,
working closely with colleagues in Information Technology, Media, and Classroom
Services, the Centre for Teaching & Learning, and Advanced Research
Computing. The VEM Librarian is also responsible for liaising with assigned
academic units including reference service, collection development and
instructional programs. Liaison areas assigned may vary depending on candidate
profile.
As the ideal candidate you will hold a graduate degree from an accredited
school of library, archival or information science, or equivalent
internationally accredited degree. You will have an academic background in a
subject area within the scope of UBC’s Okanagan campus or equivalent knowledge
gained through professional experience. You will also have demonstrated
knowledge of data extraction, analysis, and visualization methods, along with
experience in developing and supporting visualizations in teaching,
scholarship, and scholarly communication projects. Knowledge of research data
management and digital preservation and experience assisting scholars in the
development of digital scholarship will be important assets. The ability to
work in a team situation, strong decision-making ability, excellent
communication, and a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion are
hallmarks of your professional style.
Equity and diversity are essential to academic excellence. An open and
diverse community fosters the inclusion of voices that have been
underrepresented or discouraged. We encourage applications from members of
groups that have been marginalized on any grounds enumerated under the B.C.
Human Rights Code, including sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or
expression, racialization, disability, political belief, religion, marital or
family status, age, and/or status as a First Nation, Metis, Inuit, or
Indigenous person.
All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however, Canadians and
permanent residents will be given priority.
