Job Description

PRIMARY FUNCTION: Provide support for multiple software and web packages, build 
connections to internal and external applications, and use creativity and 
innovation to create new and exciting applications. As a member of the extended 
Smith College IT community, work within established IT standards and practices 
overseen by the Information Technology Services group, participate in 
institutional IT planning groups and initiatives, and contribute to the 
development and management of cross-unit service teams. As part of the Five 
College community, communicate and collaborate on Five College projects that 
may be beneficial to other libraries and work with our partners on development 
needs for Smith College Libraries.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Major Application Development and Support: In collaboration with Information 
Technology Services (ITS), build and maintain connections from Smith College’s 
enterprise systems to library applications including the library service 
platform; FOLIO. Develop and implement APIs allowing the libraries’ discovery 
platform, and other services to communicate with each other. Working with the 
Five Colleges, provide enhancement suggestions and recommendations for 
improving the libraries-wide service platforms.

 

Internal Systems Support: Support the libraries-wide local infrastructure 
including maintaining critical components such as the libraries Open URL 
linking system, link management software, electronic resources management 
system, teaching and learning products including the Springshare suite, 
Interlibrary loan software, proxy server, and institutional repository. Support 
the libraries website, including bug fixes, package updates and future 
development. In conjunction with Information Technology Services, coordinate 
technology solutions.

 

Big Ideas/Innovative Projects:  Develop, pilot, and implement creative ideas 
that have not been done in libraries. Build exciting solutions that help 
improve scholarship, discovery, and expand the boundaries of libraries. 
Discover, explore, monitor, and evaluate emerging technologies, applications, 
and web services. Be comfortable with risk taking.

 

Other duties as assigned.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education/Experience: Bachelor’s degree; 3 years of relevant professional 
experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

 

Skills: Experience in any programming languages. Preferred experience in 
Node/React/GraphQL and PHP.  Knowledge of web development technologies and 
languages, including HTML and CSS.  Experience with User Interface and User 
Experience design.  Demonstrated experience in version control systems.  
Knowledge of searching/indexing technology.  Knowledge of API’s and how to 
create and implement them. Working knowledge of Drupal. Project management 
skills and the ability to communicate effectively with vendors.

 

Demonstrated ability to work flexibly, independently and collaboratively with 
colleagues and library users in a rapidly changing service environment.  
Ability to take initiative, solve problems and prioritize work effectively. 
Awareness of new technologies and trends and their applications for library 
services. Ability to effectively manage multiple and competing projects and 
priorities.  Excellent oral and written communication skills.
