The Developer for Digital Scholarship and Research contributes to the planning 
and implementation of digital humanities-related research and scholarly 
publishing projects involving Columbia faculty, students, and Libraries 
staff.The responsibilities of the position include tool and platform analysis; 
software development, implementation, and maintenance; project consultation and 
development; structured training and participation in the professional 
development of Columbia researchers and librarians; and digital project life 
cycle and sustainability consultation with research and publishing 
partners.This position reports within the Digital Library and Scholarly 
Technologies group and works closely with the Libraries Research and Learning 
and Libraries Collections groups, and provides an exciting opportunity for an 
enthusiastic developer to gain insight and experience supporting digital 
scholarship and research projects in a supportive and collaborative environment.

Responsibilities

Evaluating, implementing and maintaining relevant tools, technologies, and 
platforms for conducting and publishing digital research.
Engaging in creative prototyping in support of research and scholarly 
initiatives in which the Libraries are engaged.
Consulting on and facilitating the use and reuse of digital library collections 
for scholarship and research.
Developing curricula and conducting training in the use of digital tools for 
scholarship and research.
Advising on library or faculty project life cycle and sustainability options 
and requirements.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree and/or its equivalent experience required with 2-4 years of 
related experience.
Experience with command line use of computers and one or more relevant 
programming or scripting languages (e.g. JavaScript, Python, Perl, Ruby, PHP).
Experience with modern web standards (HTML/CSS/JavaScript).
Ability to manage software development using revision control tools (e.g. Git, 
SVN)
Strong interpersonal and communications skills and demonstrated ability to work 
as part of collaborative teams. Ability to communicate with collaborators of 
varying technical literacy.

Preferred Qualifications

Advanced degree in computer science, or a related field.
Experience with unix-based operating systems and virtualization environments.
Experience with relational databases (e.g. MySQL, PostgreSQL).
Experience with non-relational datastores (e.g. Solr, graphstores).
Experience in one or more digital research techniques (e.g. natural language 
processing, computational text analysis, data mining, machine learning, spatial 
data manipulation/mapping, data modeling and visualization, innovative use of 
digital media in web publications).
Experience with XML/XSLT, GIS, or linked data technologies and standards.
Experience with platforms used for digital exhibits, archives, or research 
support.
