Position Overview: 

The Kathryn A. Martin Library has one opening for the Web Development/Design 
Professional 2 position.  This is a full-time, 12 month position.  Position 
will be open until November 15, 2021.  Anticipated start date is January 24, 
2022.  Starting salary for this position is $57,899.55

The Kathryn A. Martin Library’s Web Development/Design Professional 2 is 
responsible for one of the University of Minnesota Duluth’s most visited 
websites, providing a platform for students, faculty, staff, and community 
members to connect with collections, resources, assistance, and services to 
enable research, teaching, and learning.

As a member of the Administration Team, this employee develops, coordinates, 
and maintains the library’s website; shares responsibility with ITSS shared 
services for maintaining and troubleshooting library hardware and software; and 
provides staff training related to web pages and CMS. 

A Web Development/Design Professional 2 conceptualizes, designs, creates, and 
modifies content and functionality of websites for internal employees, student 
learners and external communications purposes. Utilizes server-side, 
client-side, and database tools.. Optimizes performance, security, and 
scalability. Evaluates, schedules, and identifies resources for design 
projects; investigates user needs; plans, develops and implements website 
applications; and prepares website systems documentation for reference and 
training purposes.. Conducts usability tests, creates reports and 
presentations, and communicates results. Works with usability designers and 
developers to provide feedback and refine user experience across the entire 
development process.

As the chair of the library’s Web Committee, this employee provides 
collaborative leadership of the on-going development and improvement of the 
library’s website, including usability testing, long-range planning for the 
library’s web presence, and implementing feedback from users and library staff.

This position is eligible for the University’s Flexible Work Arrangement to 
include remote work.

Essential Job Functions:

Web Design and Development (65%) 


Serve as Chair of the library web committee


Manage and maintain the library’s Drupal website.  Design layouts and organize 
content using system-wide tools and templates.  Develop custom components for 
enhanced site functionality.


Manage and customizes public interfaces for 3rd party systems such as 
Springshare products (LibCal, LibGuides, LibWizard, Primo, Tipasa, etc.


Ensure site and products work on various operating systems, browsers and devices


Ensure site follows library, UMD and UofM web guidelines


Ensure site legally meets WCAG 2.0 Level AA accessibility standards


Update and maintain a roadmap for library website maintenance


Coordinate content lifecycle and workflow between staff and web team


Conduct usability testing to continually improve website and third party 
products


Promote best practices for using Drupal and writing for the web


Enhance the self-service aspect of website 


Collaborate with ITSS and UMPR to develop future designs and improve Drupal


Investigate, evaluate, test and recommend new web technologies


Write and maintain web documentation for admins and web team


Maintain Google presence and analytics 


Technology support(20%) 


Order, install and troubleshoot library-specific hardware


Assist with library software installation and troubleshooting at service point 
computers and in Archives and Digital Services areas


Maintain supply and storage spaces for library hardware


Support for Web Contributors and Staff Training (10%)


Identify web related needs and work with library staff to implement new online 
initiatives


Administer staff permissions for the website and shared software products


Prepare and maintain staff procedures and guidelines for web updates


Provide training and assistance for website, chat, and other services


Apprise supervisor of web development trends and recommend appropriate responses


Other Responsibilities (5%)


Maintain the Ramseyer-Northern Bible Society Collection website


Work effectively with all members of the Administration team to achieve the 
library’s mission and goals and contribute to library team organizational 
development and communication


Other duties as assigned


Qualifications/Overview:

Required:


BA/BS plus at least two years of experience, or master’s degree.


Experience contributing to a diverse and inclusive work environment, including 
experience implementing actions that improve digital accessibility


Preferred:


Web development experience, including knowledge of HTML, CSS, Javascript, PHP, 
and responsive mobile design


Creative aptitude for web skills to produce high quality content with limited 
assistance


Experience with Drupal, Dreamweaver, Photoshop, Illustrator, and/or other 
content management systems and design and coding software


Experience in project management and collaborative leadership


Strong communication skills

The Kathryn A. Martin Library is prized for its design and architecture and 
features views of Lake Superior. It has been updated to serve today’s 
researchers, including the renovation of our library teaching spaces. UMD is a
