The University of San Francisco’s Gleeson Library | Geschke Learning Resource 
Center seeks an engaged, innovative and enthusiastic individual for Head of 
Metadata & Collection Management. As a member of the library leadership 
team, this individual will advance the library’s efforts to transform and 
improve the management and discovery of our collections. The position oversees 
the functions of acquisitions, periodicals, cataloging and metadata, with a 
focus on demonstrating the impact of library collections and meeting the needs 
of our diverse students and faculty. The library has a strong commitment to

Full Job Description:

Reporting to the Associate Dean for Collection Services, the Head of Metadata 
& Collection Management leads a team of 6.0 FTE staff and librarians in 
acquisitions and cataloging functions ensuring that library information 
resources are rapidly and accurately ordered, received, processed, and 
described in the library’s catalog and discovery interfaces. This position will 
also work closely with library liaisons in their collection development 
activities.

In conjunction with the Associate Dean for Collection Services, the incumbent 
develops policies and provides leadership for collection management activities 
including selection, deselection, and assessment of resources in all formats 
and subjects of the general library collection; monitors acquisitions 
expenditures; reviews collections data to determine how well our collections 
represent diverse cultures and perspectives and serve the needs of diverse 
campus communities and constituents in alignment with our Collection 
Development Diversity Statement and other strategic initiatives.

Additional duties include: reviewing and evaluating workflows and work 
assignments with an eye toward increasing efficiencies and better supporting 
students and faculty; developing, coordinating, and implementing bibliographic 
control policy and practices across the ILS (III Sierra), Discovery (EBSCO 
EDS), and digital repository systems (ContentDM and Digital Commons); hiring 
and training staff and librarians; collecting and analyzing data and statistics 
related to the collection; performing original and copy cataloging; 
participating in local and national professional organizations; service to the 
USF community; and other duties as assigned. Evening and weekend hours may be 
required. Librarians are part of the USF Faculty Association (USFFA), an AFT 
collective bargaining unit. Appointment is at the Associate Librarian level.

Requirements  ALA accredited MLIS or MLS degree; demonstrated acquisitions, 
cataloging, and/or metadata creation/management operations experience; ability 
to analyze workflows and implement service improvements in light of local and 
national library trends; outstanding interpersonal, written and oral 
communications skills; experience using spreadsheets and other data analysis 
tools; evidence of successful and creative supervision of staff and operations, 
including demonstrated potential for leading transformational change; strong 
commitment to equity and inclusion and the ability to work effectively and 
collegially with students, faculty, and staff from diverse backgrounds; ability 
to work within a collaborative environment with diverse groups and to inspire 
and motivate.

Preferred Experience: Five or more years related experience in acquisitions, 
cataloging, and/or inclusive collection development and management within an 
academic library setting. Experience with creating collection development and 
management policies and strategies. Experience working with library vendors and 
negotiating license agreements. Knowledge of current, evolving, and innovative 
models of collection development & assessment. Ability to perform data 
analysis and use data to make evidence-based decisions. Working knowledge of 
national cataloging protocols and current cataloging best practices; knowledge 
of other metadata standards (Dublin Core, MODS) and tools to transform and/or 
crosswalk metadata. Demonstrated experience or interest in working with diverse 
groups, cultural humility and ability to support the advancement of DEI 
initiatives.
