Digital Preservation Specialist

As a member of the Library Collections team and under the direction of the 
Assistant Director for Discovery Services, the Digital Preservation Specialist 
is responsible for the continued operation of a library-wide, comprehensive 
preservation and digitization program. Responsible for overseeing preservation, 
conservation and digitization efforts for Archives, Special Collections and the 
general collections. Manages the preservation activities for the Libraries’ 
unique digital content. Responsible for disaster planning and recovery, 
environmental monitoring, and exhibition preparation activities. Assists with 
management of the digitization lab and services. 

Primary Duties: 

Work with the Assistant Director for Discovery Services to maintain a 
library-wide preservation and digitization program. 
Establish goals, set priorities and objectives for the continued preservation 
and conservation of the physical collections of Wellesley College. 
Collaborate with the Assistant Director for Discovery Services and others on 
digital preservation planning that focuses on all phases of the digital life 
cycle, in order to ensure long-term access to the Libraries’ unique digitized 
and born-digital content. 
Serve as the platform manager for the Libraries’ digital preservation system.
Manage activities around conservation, digitization, and overall preservation 
of materials from Archives, Special Collections and general collections based 
on current archival and conservation practices. This includes the coordination 
of preservation, conservation and digitization outsourcing, environmental 
monitoring of collections, and disaster response and recovery.
Assist in the supervision of a team of student staff in digitization and 
preservation activities. 
Oversee preparation of library materials as needed for exhibits or exhibitions.
Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

Master’s degree in a relevant field and 3-5 years of equivalent experience.
In-depth knowledge of preservation and digitization standards such as OAIS, 
PREMIS, and NDSA Levels of Digital Preservation, and an understanding of 
emerging trends.
Experience with digital preservation tools such as BitCurator, Archivematica, 
BagIt, and Archive-It.
Experience with the development and management of digitization workflows.
Knowledge of physical conservation methods and treatments and experience with 
book repair.
Experience or training in the handling of rare and fragile paper-based 
materials.
Ability to work independently, as well as collaboratively as part of a team.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Commitment to fostering an equitable and inclusive workplace, and an ability to

Excellent organization skills and effectiveness in balancing multiple 
assignments/projects.
