Systems Administrator

 

The Roy Rosenzweig Center for History and New Media (rrchnm.org) at George 
Mason University is seeking an innovative, full-time Systems Administrator and 
DevOps team member to work at a dynamic digital humanities center. George Mason

About the Department:

RRCHNM is a mid-sized team of software developers, designers, and historians 
that develops open-source historical projects and that creates freely available 
online resources for teachers, scholars, and the public. The Systems 
Administrator will work with a small DevOps team to deploy and maintain our 
technical infrastructure, as well as coordinate closely with project teams. 
They will thus play a vital role in supporting a technology infrastructure that 
provides historical and educational content for millions of users as a public 
good.

 

Responsibilities:

The Systems Administrator will maintain and grow the technical infrastructure 
of the center that includes over a dozen servers that received over 2.6 million 
visits in 2021 and a complex set of networked connections, storage, databases, 
software, programming languages, and operating systems. The Systems 
Administrator will be an integral part of our ongoing sustainability and 
digital preservation efforts, and will be responsible for ensuring the security 
and uptime of a major technical operation.

 

Required Qualifications:

·       Ability to self-start and self-manage daily workload, as well as to 
collaborate with colleagues in leading RRCHNM’s technical infrastructure;

·       Experience administering production CentOS/RHEL Linux servers and a 
high availability cluster in a multiuser environment;

·       Experience maintaining high-traffic PHP/MySQL websites;

·       Demonstrated knowledge of Apache, PHP, MySQL, and PostgreSQL 
administration, Linux security practices (i.e., permissions, iptables, IDS), 
system monitoring, shell scripting, high availability practices (e.g., load 
balancing, clustered filesystems), virtualization and containerization, DNS 
administration, and website optimization;

·       Experience installing, maintaining, and administering content 
management systems (e.g., WordPress, Omeka);

·       Experience addressing security needs across servers and websites;

·       Experience installing server hardware (e.g., servers, routers, RAID 
storage);

·       Ability to document technical infrastructure and to communicate clearly 
with non-technical stakeholders;

·       Ability to liaison with colleagues in GMU’s central Information and 
Technology Services and GMU’s on-campus data center;

·       Demonstrated troubleshooting abilities (e.g., quickly diagnosing and 
fixing broken websites); and

·       Bachelor’s degree or equivalent education and experience.
