I have been doing experiments along these lines with Avanti MicroLCS. I've built a fully functional OPAC that runs off a USB drive that has on it everything needed to support it including its own JRE. Just plug it in and turn it on with little or no setup. I have some concerns though about the lifetime of such a device given the finite number of writes that can be made to Flash memory. But it does provide a nice platorm in which to develop an OPAC that is much an appliance device as possible which is my goal.
