Digital Library Development – Team Lead       

The Los Alamos National Laboratory Research Library, one of the world's premier 
digital 
scientific libraries, is seeking a lead for its Digital Library Development 
Team, a team of 
application programmers and technically inclined librarians, to provide vision 
regarding 
architecture and functionality through both coordination and direct involvement 
in the 
development of the technical infrastructure for preservation, management and 
delivery of 
scientific and technical institutional digital content. 

The incumbent will lead projects aimed at tackling challenges of information 
interoperability and integration across our large scale and complex digital 
collection, 
which includes > 95M bibliographic records, and numerous growing repositories 
of 
institutional digital content that align with the LANL national security 
science mission and 
build on emergent e-research needs of our community. 

Responsibilities:

•     Provide clear vision, direction, and strong leadership in areas of 
responsibility, 
including reviewing existing digital library tools and information structures 
and planning 
and implementing enhancements and goals for future integration and delivery of 
on-line 
services;
• Provide administrative oversight, including supervising, coaching, and 
supporting the 
Research Library’s Development Team, to foster an environment that encourages 
creativity and innovation, professional growth and development, and 
collaboration across 
teams.   
• Oversee development and expansion of new strategies that expand the 
library’s 
services, such as discovery and workflow management of scholarly content,  and 
collection and curation of digital institutional materials. 
• Investigate and work with other groups in the Library, at the Laboratory, 
and potentially 
across the DOE Complex and academic communities, and implement, as appropriate, 
next-generation tools.
• Engage in understanding user satisfaction and user knowledge of Library 
technical 
capabilities and electronic services, and take appropriate actions by assisting 
management in proposing, planning, and implementing policies, processes, and 
methods 
for improving Library integration into the research community across the 
Laboratory.
• Contribute to overall library planning and operations as a member of the 
Management 
Team.  
• Serve as an advocate for the Research Library and represent the library in 
Laboratory 
and industry activities.

Required Skills:

• Demonstrated experience with designing and developing resource-centric 
applications 
that adhere to core architectural principles of the Web including the Web 
Architecture and 
REST; 
• Experience with standards from the digital library community (OAI-PMH, 
OAI-ORE, 
OpenURL, SRU/W, etc.); 
• Demonstrated experience with standard web programming tools/frameworks 
(Java, 
Perl, php, Python, Ajax, etc) and database query syntax (SQL/mySQL); 
• Demonstrated experience with using mainstream Web 2.0 technologies (HTTP, 
RSS, 
XML, JSON, Atom, RESTful APIs); 
• Ongoing interest in Semantic Web technologies and concepts including RDF, 
RDFS, OWL, 
triple stores, SPARQL, etc., and embrace of concepts from Social Web activities 
and 
Linked Data; 
• Demonstrated ability to lead complex and cross-organizational projects; 
• Ability to effectively supervise, train, and motivate staff. 
• Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and analytical skills including 
communication 
and presentation skills, both written and oral.
• Applicants must have the ability to obtain an Q clearance, which normally 
requires U.S. 
citizenship.

Education: 
Master's degree in Library/Information Science or Computer Science or 
equivalent 
combination of education and experience. 

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level) – this generally 
requires US 
Citizenship.  Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background 
investigation and 
must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified matter.
