Description and duties: Scholars Portal, in operation since 2002, is a service of the Ontario Council of University Libraries. Scholars Portal manages a shared technology infrastructure that supports shared collections for all of the 21 university libraries in the province. The Scholars Portal repository of locally-loaded e-resources integrates access and archiving for e-content for Ontario university libraries. The Scholars Portal EBooks service, released in 2010, holds over 50,000 electronic books from a dozen different commercial collections as well as over 200,000 digitized books from the Open Content Alliance. Reporting to the Scholars Portal Manager, and working with a team of programmers, systems support specialists, and librarians, the Scholars Portal Digital Content Production Coordinator will develop procedures and practices to ensure the efficient, timely, and accurate loading of digital resources from all of OCUL's publishing partners and will be responsible for communicating progress and identifying issues with staff at member libraries. Ensuring that access to newly acquired content is provided in an efficient and timely manner is a critical component of the ongoing success of the platform. The Production Coordinator will work with publishers to set up data transfer procedures; will work with the metadata librarian to identify suitable sources of metadata for each package of books and journals; will marshal the content received from the publishers and verify it for accuracy and completeness, running various "pre-flight" checks for font embedding, cropping and so forth; will work with the programmers to develop loaders for the content; will test the results of sample loads; will resolve any errors in the content that is loaded; will organize the sourcing and production of MARC records for distribution to the schools; will maintain title lists and communicate loading priorities and timeframes with the schools; and will manage entitlements to ensure that content is delivered only to users with appropriate rights. Strong, ongoing collaboration amongst the OCUL membership is critical for OCUL's continuing success. The Librarian will need to build relationships across multiple organizations and levels.
