POSITION TITLE:               Systems Development Librarian

REPORTS TO:                      Head, Systems

POSITION RANK:              Assistant Professor

SALARY:                               Minimum $44,000

The Systems Development Librarian reports to the Head of Systems. This position 
supervises two staff members (one exempt and one non-exempt) and works in 
conjunction with members of Systems and other library departments, in 
particular public service departments such as Integrated User Services and 
Research Services, to explore, develop, test, and implement ideas for new 
systems and services using emerging technologies in support of teaching, 
learning, and the library’s strategic goals. Ability to organize and present 
information in group settings. Works closely with computer hardware/software 
vendors, UTK campus computing (OIT), and other external technology groups as 
appropriate.



This position also works collaboratively with members of Systems and other 
library departments on the continual support, development, and evolution of the 
UTK Libraries’ Web site and overall online presence, media streaming services, 
and mobile technology services.



The Knoxville campus of the University of Tennessee is seeking candidates who 
have the ability to contribute in meaningful ways to the diversity and 
intercultural goals of the University.


Specific Duties:

45%        Anticipate and track technology trends. Investigate and test new 
information technologies and share with library colleagues. Collaborate with 
library colleagues to identify ways new technologies, or old technologies used 
in new ways, can solve problems, meet needs, and create new services. Develop 
and implement new systems and services based on new technologies as appropriate.



20%        Provide technical leadership for Web-based and other online library 
services and initiatives. Anticipate and track changing Web technologies and 
implement system changes and updates as appropriate. Collaborate with library 
colleagues to develop and maintain consistency of Web pages across all library 
departments.



10%        Supervise (1) exempt Development Programmer and (1) non-exempt Web 
Designer.



15%        Conduct original research and report the results through the 
scholarly literature and conferences of librarianship, information science, and 
computer science.



10%        Participate in committees, working groups, and task forces as 
appropriate.



Fiscal Responsibility:

Recommend the purchase of library technology within a prescribed budget and 
participate in the writing of bid specs for complex, multi-vendor systems as 
appropriate.



Required Qualifications:

MLS from an ALA-accredited institution. Relevant professional-level technology 
experience (academic library preferred). Understanding of network standards and 
protocols. Knowledge of developments and trends in information systems, 
particularly emerging technologies in libraries and higher education. 
Understanding of Blackboard or similar course management systems. Extensive 
knowledge of core Web technologies and programming environments including HTML, 
CSS, and Javascript. Understanding of video streaming technologies. Familiarity 
with one or more scripting languages such as PHP, Python, Perl, or Ruby. 
Knowledge of best practices for Web design and usability. Evidence of excellent 
written and oral communication skills and ability to work collegially. 
Demonstrated experience managing complex technical projects. Strong commitment 
to making technology work for people.



Preferred Qualifications:

Supervisory experience. Project management experience. Experience with XML, 
XSLT, or other digital library technologies. Experience with content management 
systems and frameworks such as WordPress, Django, Rails, or Drupal.

Salary and Benefits:
Appointment at rank of Assistant Professor with a minimum salary of $44,000. 
Faculty rank and status; twelve-month, tenure-track appointment. Library 
faculty must meet University requirements for promotion and tenure. Excellent 
benefits include 24 annual leave days; choice of state retirement plan or 
TIAA/CREF with nonrefundable contributions paid for the employee by the 
University; optional group health and life insurance plans. Tuition remission 
is available for all university employees; partial undergraduate tuition 
remission is available to dependent children and spouses of UT employees.
