As a key member of the Resource Management Services unit, this position will:

  * Manage all aspects of the cataloging/metadata unit, including planning and 
procedures, description, processing and preservation. Supervise Metadata and 
Special Projects specialist and Library specialist, as well as student 
employees. May also supervise interns or volunteers.
  * In coordination with the Associate Director of Resource Management 
Services, set policy for metadata services.
  * Oversee the efficient creation of metadata for library collections in a 
wide range of formats, both electronic and physical.
  * Provide original cataloging as needed; perform complex copy cataloging; 
subject analysis; classification. Oversee and monitor authority control.
  * Collaborate with cataloging efforts and practices in the Orbis Cascade 
Alliance, a large academic library consortium to which Collins Memorial Library 
belongs.
  * Coordinate and supervise metadata efforts for exposing external university 
collections to users.
  * Collaborate with library colleagues on appropriate metadata planning and 
implementation for exposing contents of the Institutional Repository, Digital 
Collections and Archives.
  * Monitor national trends in metadata, cataloging and discovery; develop and 
implement best practices in these areas, particularly RDA and FRBR.
  * Thoroughly understand and exploit the cataloging module of the integrated 
library system, its relation to other discovery systems and consider its 
effects on users in determining procedures.
  * Develop crosswalks to convert data from one metadata schema to another with 
minimal manual intervention.
  * Actively participate in regional consortia, pursue continuing education and 
professional development opportunities.
  * Foster a work environment of productivity, assessment based planning and 
user centered practices.
  * Provide and/or organize training to keep appropriate staff current in job 
responsibilities and metadata skills.
  * Maintain essential records and statistics and prepare reports as needed.
  * Other duties as may be assigned by the Associate Director of Resource 
ManagementServices.
**Qualifcations:**  
  
Required:

  * Graduate degree in library and information science from an ALA-accredited 
institution.
  * Demonstrated training or experience working in cataloging/metadata.
  * Demonstrated understanding of metadata principles and practices, such as 
those found in AACR2, RDA, Dublin Core and other emerging metadata schemes.
  * Demonstrated experience working with a bibliographic utility.
  * Awareness of current issues and trends in metadata development.
  * Ability to collaborate with others in designing and facilitating work 
processes across unit lines.
  * Ability to function effectively in an ambiguous and rapidly changing 
environment.
  * Excellent organizational, analytical, time management and communication 
skills.
  * A commitment to quality service and to the ideals of a liberal arts 
education.
  * Demonstrated potential to be an effective supervisor.
Preferred:

  * Cataloging experience in a library-work environment, preferably academic.
  * Experience with content standards RDA, AACR2 and with FRBR concepts.
  * Demonstrated working knowledge of classification standards LCSH and SuDocs.
  * Demonstrated experience working within a large, widely-used Integrated 
Library System (ILS) platform.
  * Demonstrated experience manipulating standards-based (such as MARC, XML) 
metadata using lower-level utilities (MarcEdit, oXygen) or scripting languages 
(such as Perl, PHP, XSL).
  * Demonstrated understanding of digital collections and the tools used to 
work with them.
  * Second language familiarity (Chinese, Japanese, French, Spanish or German 
preferred).
  * Demonstrated ability to supervise and mentor employees.
