Assists in format, design, and coding of library web sites and services
content. Performs basic troubleshooting of web services and
assists with maintenance of web applications.

Scope of Responsibility

  * Creates, formats or codes, maintains, and deletes static and dynamic web 
content based on departmental standards and systems.
  * Under guidance, is responsible for prioritizing, clarifying, and completing 
content updates requested by library staff in a timely manner and in accordance 
with departmental and current web content creation standards.
  * Proofs and corrects basic code generated by other staff and applications to 
ensure standards compliance/conformity, accessibility and efficiency.
  * Communicates with library patrons on matters related to BPL web sites and 
services, to help resolve technical issues, responds to user inquiries, and 
does so in a timely and thorough manner.
  * Works with IT staff through established procedures to ensure proper 
configuration and reliable operation of web services hosted on library systems 
and/or over the library network.
  * Devises and employs interim solutions and workarounds for technical web 
issues that may arise, while working toward full resolution of the root cause, 
either solo, or for more advanced issues, in conjunction with others.
  * As assigned, works closely with outside vendors and their technicians to 
ensure maximum availability of web services.
  * Escalates unresolved issues to appropriate staff in web services, or to 
other IT groups or outside vendors as appropriate.
  * Maintains web services documentation via external manuals and internal 
comments in source code with appropriate input as needed from other staff.
  * Adheres to established source control, backup, and revision control 
policies and procedures.
  * Creates, updates, and maintains systems-specific user accounts and 
permissions for public and staff use of library web services, in accordance 
with departmental procedures.
  * Assists in usability, unit, and regression testing of source code and 
applications.
  * Supports and troubleshoots library web sites and services, access to 
externally hosted online resources, and web content creation tools.
  * As required, trains and supervises web services staff and provides basic 
instruction on web services to other library staff.
  * Interacts with public and staff and provides excellent customer service.
  * Attends training as directed.
  * Functions as a team member on assigned web-related projects.
  * Identifies and suggests opportunities for online service improvements 
focusing on improved customer service, usability, and technical efficiencies.
  * Participates in strategic planning and project planning for the web 
services department.
  * Performs other related duties as required.
  
Competencies

  * Ability to accept responsibility, lead, supervise and direct the work of 
others, to plan and supervise work to satisfactory completion, and to 
collaborate successfully with staff and patrons of all age levels.
  * Solid knowledge of (X)HTML, CSS, JavaScript; internet and web-based 
services, and current best practices of web accessibility and usability, 
including design and layout. Additional proficiency with PHP and MySQL 
preferred.
  * Strong writing, editing, and proofreading skills.
  * Experience in writing and designing for the Web, content management, and 
social media.
  * Proficiency with MS Word, Outlook, Publisher, PowerPoint, and Excel.
  * Ability to develop guides and provide basic instruction for both the public 
and library staff.
  * Basic public speaking and presentation skills as well as ability to 
communicate effectively and to present ideas clearly.
  * Demonstrates initiative and appropriate independent decision making skills.
  * Identifies, plans, and prioritizes job responsibilities and tasks.
  * Demonstrated ability to work under deadlines in a front-line support 
capacity.
  
Qualifications

  * Education - High School graduate or equivalent. Associate or Bachelor 
Degree and coursework in web design/development preferred.
  * Experience 
    * Two to four years work experience using (X)HTML, JavaScript, and CSS to 
publish web content, including editing code by hand.Experience using web 
editing software such as Dreamweaver or similar applications.
    * Experience using Photoshop or similarly robust image editing 
applications. Additional familiarity editing video and audio preferred.
    * Demonstrated experience in troubleshooting basic back-end web site issues.
    * Minimum of 2 years in customer support.
  
Requirements:

  * Ability to exercise good judgment and focus on detail as required by the 
job.
  * CORI - Must successfully clear a Criminal Offenders Record Information 
check with the City of Boston.
  * Residency - Must be a resident of the City of Boston upon the first day of 
hire.
