The position supports creation, organization, and maintenance of metadata to
facilitate discovery and access to resources in various formats, using
traditional cataloging standards as well as existing and emerging metadata
schemas and techniques such as linked data. It also includes reviewing print
materials in Humanities subject area for discovery metadata creation. (The
appointment will be made at the Assistant or Associate level, depending on
qualifications and experience.)

  
RESPONSIBILITIES:

  * Create discovery metadata for Humanities materials applying the metadata 
schema appropriate to the material as defined by policy. Currently, predominate 
schema is RDA applied according to the BIBCO standards, but others such as MODS 
are applied as needed.
  * Responsible for associated authority work and quality control as defined by 
policy for particular schemas; participate in the NACO and SACO programs: 
search authority files, create and update name and series authority records.
  * Collaborate with team members to evaluate, select, and apply metadata 
schemas and techniques, standards, data elements, and thesauri to provide 
description and access to SUL collections. Actively pursue innovative discovery 
techniques as they emerge and adapt them to the local environment as 
appropriate.
  * Participate in the development of Stanford's linked-data environment.
  * May act as project manager or consultant for the creation and management of 
descriptive and other metadata for selected projects in Metadata Department.
  * Maintain active link with the curators responsible for Humanities 
collections.
  * Serve as language expert for catalogers and staff in Technical Services.
  * Participate in relevant professional activities.
  * Perform other duties as needed.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

  * Masters degree from an ALA-accredited institution required at time of 
applying.
  * Theoretical knowledge of current cataloging procedures and principles as 
defined in RDA and AACR2, the MARC Bibliographic, Holdings, and Authorities 
formats. Ability to rapidly learn and implement new cataloging procedures and 
principles adopted by the Department. (Practical knowledge required for the 
Associate level.)
  * Knowledge of current and emerging models and tools for resource discovery 
and access.
  * Ability to rapidly learn and implement new cataloging procedures and 
principles adopted by the Department.
  * Advanced knowledge of one modern Western European language in addition to 
English (Spanish preferred); working knowledge of all other modern Western 
European languages.
  * Ability to learn, analyze, and utilize existing and emerging metadata 
standards, such as Dublin Core, EAD, MODS, METS, OAI, TEI, XML, and relevant 
thesauri or ontologies, as required by special projects. Ability to provide 
mapping between different metadata standards in a dynamic environment. Ability 
to work creatively within a linked-data environment.
  * Knowledge of XML and XSLT (desirable for the Assistant, required for the 
Associate level).
  * Project management skills (experience required for the Associate level).
  * High level of proficiency using PC-based applications (Windows, word 
processing, spreadsheets) and other computer applications (email, Internet, 
Integrated Library Systems); high level computer competency kept up to date 
through continuous learning.
  * Excellent analytic and problem solving skills.
  * Consistent accuracy and attention to detail while maintaining a very high 
level of productivity.
  * Effective oral and written communication skills.
  * Ability to work independently and as a team member in a rapidly changing 
environment on a variety of simultaneous workflows.
