In this course you will build a simple web application with a database back-end 
using PHP and MySQL. You will learn basic PHP syntax and control structures 
(if/else, for), as well as built-in commands for manipulating data. You will 
also learn MySQL commands for creating, reading, updating and deleting 
information in a small relational database.

Prior knowledge of HTML, including HTML forms, is recommended.

Students will:
- Gain enough knowledge of PHP and MySQL to inspire confidence with peers and 
library IT departments
- Gain a basic understanding of PHP and MySQL syntax
- Learn planning techniques and strategies for implementing a digitization 
program
- Evaluate various approaches and standards to metadata, understand metadata 
interoperability
- Learn the standard sizes, formats and techniques for scanning images
- Create a working example application that writes PHP code to create, read, 
update and delete information from a MySQL database
- Be able to plan and build a simple relational database with 2-4 tables
- Be able to read and interpret PHP and MySQL errors

Caleb Tucker-Raymond is a freelance web developer in Portland, Oregon 
specializing in connecting library systems to the Drupal content management 
system. Before that he worked as a public and academic librarian for 14 years 
in systems, reference, and the intersection of the two. He earned his MSLIS 
with Simmons College.

Course structure
This is an online class that is taught asynchronously, meaning that 
participants do the work on their own time as their schedules allow. The class 
does not meet together at any particular times, although the instructor may set 
up optional sychronous chat sessions. Instruction includes readings and 
assignments in one-week segments. Class participation is in an online forum 
environment.
