Senior Library Applications Programmer

The Senior Library Applications Developer provides leadership for developers
throughout Digital Technologies in establishing best practices for software
development and serves as part of the Digital Technologies project management
team to regularly plan and coordinate work, and to regularly review and revise
project management practices. S/He serves as lead developer on high impact
projects and is currently responsible for the planning and implementation of
the Library's combined Discovery service (Blacklight/Summon), including the
integration of data from external data sources (ILS, Brown Digital Repository,
HathiTrust, VIVO). S/he is also responsible for the applications that drive
the VIVO service. Additionally, s/he provides expertise and software
development for new initiatives, contributes to other Library software
development projects as needed, and seeks out opportunities to apply existing
technologies for the improvement of Library services.

  
Positions Requirements:

  * Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Science, or a related 
field or the equivalent combination of education and experience
  * Experience with Python, Ruby, or Java programming languages
  * Experience of three or more years in the developing and implementing 
complex web applications using MVC frameworks such as Django or Rails
  * Demonstrated experience with search/indexing technology (e.g., Apache Solr)
  * Experience working with the RDF data model, semantic web design principles, 
and related standards
  * Demonstrated proficiency applying best practices to and planning technical 
projects; experience with team collaboration tools and version control systems
  * Demonstrated experience with Unix or Linux server platforms, related 
software, and basic system administration utilities
  * Ability to learn new technical skills quickly; ability to meet deadlines; 
strong service-orientation. Ability to adapt emerging technologies to new 
domains
  * Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills
  * Creativity and strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  
Preferred Qualifications:

  * Master's degree in information science, library science, computer science 
or related field
  * In-depth knowledge of library policies and practice, metadata standards and 
the scholarly communication framework
  * Demonstrated success participating in and contributing to open source 
software development projects
  * Demonstrated experience with library applications, technology, and 
standards, including experience participating in relevant library open source 
efforts
