Selected only applies when you physically touch the screen in touch devices. Otherwise it's ignored and you will see the unselected state.
Notice that setSelected() is a method of button for CheckBox/RadioButton that checks the button and unrelated to style changes. If you'll explain the UI you are trying to achieve I'll guide you more precisely on how to do that.
