Not having actually looked at these files, I'd have to say that none of
them are likely to have been the cause of your problem--none of them do
anything with servers linking.  The only ones that should have any effect
are s_conf.c and m_server.c.  The latter is a major pain in the rear for
me, but I'm not aware of any problems it may have with regards to link
passwords.  How long are your passwords?  Perhaps it's a length limitation
or something like that--certainly not beyond the realm of possibility.
