Note that the gnuworld's site documentation has not been updated for the new naming scheme that SourceForge deployed, what, a year ago? Two? Anyway, try using the host gnuworld.cvs.sourceforge.net instead of just cvs.sourceforge.net. Note that this is from memory, so if that doesn't work, go to gnuworld's SourceForge page and visit the CVS page from there--it'll have the directions you need.
