My request may be unusual. Or maybe it's not. However, I am a PhD candidate in communication studies at University of Quebec at Montreal (and also an associate professor at University of Quebec at Trois-Rivières), and for my dissertation I have chosen to study the Undernet as a case of sociotechnical innovation in communication technology.
I am more precisely trying to understand how users of the IRC directly or undirectly contributed to major shifts in the technical system underlying the Undernet (protocol, server software (ircu), services (channel service in particular) and so on). I have identifyied a key-moment in the history of the Undernet : the major DoS attacks in january 2001 and the "head in sand" policy that followed as an effort to make the network less vulnerable. Therefore, here is my demand(s) : - When was coder-com list created and dit it exist in early 2001? - If the answer is 'yes', would it be possible for me to be allowed to study the archives of the list right from its creation, till the end of 2001? (It's not possible on the present Mailman interface, nor through the www.mail-archive.com website which tracks posts back to 2001/04/29) - If "coder-com" was not created at the same as the Undernet itself, was there another asynchronous means of communication used to discuss oper issues before it was available? I would be interested in any other kind of documents like logs of IRC sessions discussing the events of 2001 and technical options considered, memos, RFCs, etc. Of course, I assure you that absolutely no real name, e-mail address, or nickname will be disclosed in my dissertation. If you would like to know more about me before letting me read these documents, here is a link to my webpage : http://grm.uqam.ca/?q=latzko As you can see, my mother tongue is French, so most of my writing is done in this language. Thank you for considering my demand, Yours, Guillaume Latzko-Toth Université du Québec à Montréal / Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières Groupe de recherche et d'observation sur les usages et cultures médiatiques [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://grm.uqam.ca/?q=latzko _______________________________________________ Coder-com mailing list Coder-com@undernet.org http://undernet.sbg.org/mailman/listinfo/coder-com
