For my 2 cents worth.

When I saw "Compiler Theory and Construction", I took the course
thinking it would be a "good idea".

I have never regretted the decision.

A great many concepts I more fully understood after that course. Jeff's
and Peter's comments above I completely agree with.

However, after completing my course, I then looked at gcc. I came to the
conclusion that one course does not a compiler author make.

But I did enjoy the course, and would recommend to anybody doing similar
in their own degrees.
