How does the thermal paste between the CPU and fan/heatsink look? If it's 
finally gone off, it's
effectiveness can be significantly reduced.

If you want a better feeling for whether temperature is the issue and you have 
lm-sensors
configured, you could write a script to poll the temp and then load up the CPU.
