24 Jan 99-COLOMBIA: Over 440 dead and 1500 injured in an earthquake in
Colombia's central coffe growing region.

06 Jun 94�COLOMBIA: Some 1,000 killed in an earthquake and mudslide in
the Paez River valley in southwestern Colombia.

1 Sep 92�NICARAGUA: An earthquake measuring 7.0 on the Richter scale
struck the Pacific coast and killed 120 people. Over 16,000 people were
made homeless.

29 May 90�PERU: 101 people were killed when an earthquake struck 80
miles north of the town of Moyobamba. It measured 5.8 on the Richter
scale.

5 Mar 87�ECUADOR: Over 1,000 people killed and several thousand missing.
The epicenter of the quake was El Reventador, 50 miles east of Quito.

10 Oct 86�EL SALVADOR: 1,500 people killed, 20,000 people injured, over
300,000 homeless. The earthquake, measuring 7.5 on the Richter Scale,
occurred in San Salvador.

19 Sep 85�MEXICO: Between 6,000 and 12,000 killed and 40,000 people
injured. The earthquake, 8.1 on the Richter scale, hit Mexico City and
adjoining region.

3 Mar 85�CHILE: An earthquake struck Santiago killing 177 people. It
measured 7.8 (on the 12-point Mercalli scale) and made thousands
homeless.

31 Mar 83�COLOMBIA: The city of Popayan was devastated by a quake
which killed at least 500 people and left over 3,000 families homeless.
The quake measured 7 on the Mercalli scale.

12 Dec 79�COLOMBIA: An undersea earthquake measuring between 7.7 and
8.1 on the Richter scale struck the coast of Colombia. 600 people were
killed and over 80,000 people made homeless when the Port of Tumaco was
devastated by the quake and the resulting tidal wave.

4 Feb 76�GUATEMALA: A rash of quakes and resulting mudslides caused
much destruction just north of Guatemala City. The quakes, measuring up
to 7.5 on the Richter scale, killed 23,000 people, 80,000 were injured
and 1.5 million were made homeless.

23 Dec 72�NICARAGUA: A massive earthquake measuring 6.5 on the Richter
scale struck Managua. Between 5,000 and 7,000 people were killed.

31 May 70�PERU: An earthquake measuring 7.9 on the Richter scale struck
the towns of Yungay, Huaraz and Chimbote destroying all three as well as
surrounding villages. This resulted in over 70,000 dead and 600,000 left
homeless.
