The Department of State to collaborate with The Americas Foundation on trade
and democracy issues: Hispanic Latinos encouraged to lead Latin American
Development.

Washington D.C., August 2,1998. The Americas Foundation (TAF), Victor Pinzon
President, announced today, as a result of its latest round of meetings held
last Wednesday July 29th, that it will join forces with the Department of
State, under the aegis of Ambassador and Special Coordinator Myles R. R.
Frechette, to facilitate FTAA (Free Trade Area of the Americas) and
Hemispheric Democratization.
TAF was chosen because of its history, thoughtful strategic plans,
outstanding efforts, and expertise in bringing important Latin American
concerns to the forefront of U.S. Congressional and Executive agendas, one
such issue: democracy in Latin America. Pinzon said that, TAF has been
advocating the imperative need that to achieve effective, sustainable economic
development and growth in Latin America and the Caribbean, we must contribute
to nurture and strengthen democracy and its institutions to the successful
point of its own sustainability and permanence in the region.
Ambassador Frechette will directly work with TAF on some of the components of
TAFs proposed strategic plan, to enumerate the options, summarize the
progress and impediments on the proposed sweeping Latin American
Democratization "evolution". Correspondingly, TAF has been and will continue
outreaching directly to different forums in Latin America and Caribbean on
this and other issues.
As true with its efforts, TAF with the support of the State Department and
all other entities throughout the Hemisphere truly interested in
democratization, plans an aggressive outreach program to organize forums,
conferences, conventions and events, establish strategic alliances, education
and training, media programs and events, where democratization issues can be
"3-D'd": Displayed, Disseminated, and Dissected, will be scheduled coast-to-
coast in the United States, and throughout Latin America and the Caribbean.
TAF is seeking leaders, sponsors, contributors, movers and shakers, speakers,
and broad participation in all phases of its ambitious plan. "We expect our
message to become a call to arms' reaching a critical mass of the more than
30 million Latin American / Caribbean U.S. residents, and throughout Latin
America and the Caribbean showing them HOW THEY CAN take a strong leadership
and /or active position in heretofore what has been benevolently administered
to them", stated Pinzon.
State Departments Ambassador Frechette suggested that TAF work closely with
the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative on the issue of FTAA. TAF is
establishing the working relationship with Mr. Peter Olgairo, the specific
official at USTR recommended by Ambassador Frechette.
